RUSKIN CIRCLE AT FOCOLARE WOMEN’S CENTER: "THE ETHICS OF PROFIT”

  • Women's Focolare* House 4560 Mount Vernon Drive Los Angeles, CA 90043 (map)

Prof. JAMES SPATES (Hobart and William Smith Colleges) will reflect on Ruskin's seminal work of political economy UNTO THIS LAST (1862) followed by a discussion on contemporary cultural and economic challenges and various practical models of economic justice and cooperation.

John Ruskin's Unto This Last is one of the greatest attempts to rethink economic science within a larger set of principles concerning the whole of human nature. It had a profound, even transformative effect on the thought and political vision of Mohandas Gandhi.

The event will be hosted by the Women's Focolare* House in Los Angeles, CA.

*Focolare (Italian for "hearth") is an international Catholic lay movement founded in Italy in 1943. One of the concerns of the movement is the promotion of an Economy of Communion, an economic practice based on communion, gratuity, and reciprocity.
